The Screening of “Bread and Roses” at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival-

At the Cannes Film Festival, a documentary co-produced by Jennifer Lawrence about the lives of women living under the Taliban had its world premiere.

To let you know, the movie is based on the lives of three Afghan ladies, especially following the Taliban’s return to power in 2021 after the withdrawal of US soldiers.

Bread and Roses film was screened at a special screening on Sunday, 21st May 2023.

Ciarrocchi told The Hollywood Reporter-

“Jen’s first response was to find an Afghan filmmaker and give them a platform.”

And that’s how we guess, Sahra Mani came on board for the project and everything lined up for the movie.

Mani said during the Cannes screening of the film-

“This film has a message from women in Afghanistan, a soft message; please be their voice who are voiceless under Taliban dictatorship.”

The filmmaker of the film also stated in an interview posted on the Cannes website-

Even though filming was challenging, she wanted to highlight the reality of how radically life had changed for women under the Taliban dictatorship.

She also further stated, “I believed we should convey their tales since that women can’t leave the house without the veil.”

According to Mani, who currently resides in France, the safety of the filming subjects and camera workers was of first importance during the filming of the Bread and Roses documenatry.

She expanded her statement and said-

“The way in which their lives have changed under the Taliban is a cruel reality we cannot ignore; it’s life under a dictatorship.”

In a documentary, you can come across many heart-wrenching sequences, which can not only make you question many things but also push you to think differently.

There’s a scene in Bread and Roses movie-

“You only oppress women,” the young woman tells to the Taliban fighter.

“I told you not to talk,” he screams back, “I will kill you right here!”

“Okay, kill me!” she replies, raising her voice to match his. “You closed schools and universities! It’s better to kill me!”

She was ready to be transferred to a holding cell in Kabul after being recently arrested following a demonstration, as you can see in a movie.

It is a scene from the film Bread and Roses, which examines the daily activities of three women in the weeks after the takeover. It is something that will make you come across the reality of these Afgan women.

Besides, in the documentary, the militant and the woman were engaged in a direct confrontation inside a car, which was covertly and erratically recorded by a camera phone.

Also, Jennifer Lawrence, who is the producer of the film, also explained to the BBC why this particular scene in the movie means so much to her. She said-

“My heart was beating so fast watching these women defy the Taliban. You don’t see this side of the story, women fighting back, in the news every day and it’s an important part of our film, and the stories of these women.”

She later also says that contemplating the abrupt loss of authority Afghan women have experienced is heartbreaking.
