Amy Schumer has been one of the most popular American stand-up comedians, writers, and actors. She started her career in the early 2000s before competing in the NBC reality competition series Last Comic Standing’s fifth season in 2007. Recently, her old video addressing why she turned down the role of Barbie resurfaced online after the trailer of the movie was released. Read on!
The 41-year-old comedian, actress, and writer, Amy Schumer, was initially approached and even finalized for the Barbie movie. But four months later, Amy canceled the project, blaming “schedule issues.” The actress later said that this justification wasn’t totally accurate and that her decision to leave the film was actually motivated by some creative differences with the makers of the film. Why did the Trainwreck lead leave the Barbie movie?
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Amy clarified the whole matter by saying that the studio had “the wrong gal” on board from the beginning and that there was only one method she was interested in producing the film, which was at odds with Sony’s plans.
Why Exactly Did Amy Schumer Turn Down the Role of Barbie?
With the debut of the new Barbie trailer, an interview in which Amy Schumer explained why she rejected a role in Barbie has gone viral. The 41-year-old comedian claimed that scheduling issues forced her to decline this project and bring it back in 2022. The actress said she was sorry she couldn’t be in this movie, adding (not verbatim):
“The movie has a lot of potential, and Sony and Mattel have been excellent collaborators. Although I’m disappointed, I can’t wait to watch Barbie on the big screen.” Through a representative, Sony has replied, saying, “We acknowledge and applaud Amy’s choice. We eagerly anticipate introducing Barbie to the public and will shortly provide casting news and film-maker updates.”
Amy claimed in an interview that a difference of viewpoint was another factor in why she declined to accept this position. Amy said in an interview that her first concept was for her Barbie to be an inventor. She added, “They clearly didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it; that was the only way I was interested in doing it.” The production company proposed that Schumer’s Barbie might have invented high heels and that they might be made of Jello.
