Directors Guild Enters Contract Negotiations Amid US Writer’s Strike 2023

The 2023 Writers Guild of America strike is an ongoing labor conflict between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) labor union, representing 11,500 writers, and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). The US Writer’s Strike 2023 started on May 2nd and has been going on since that day.

On May 2, the Writers Guild of America started the strike after failed negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. The first week was quite intense with picketing in different areas of New York City, Los Angeles, and Atlanta, shutting down productions of major television shows and films. As the US writer’s strike 2023 enters a second week, there are some new updates made.

According to the reports, it is one of the largest dysfunction in American films and television productions after the Covid pandemic, as well as the largest labor stoppage, which happened during the WGA 2007–2008 strike.

The key area of contention in the 2023 writer’s labor dispute is the residuals from streaming media; according to the WGA. Also, the AMPTP’s part of these residuals has significantly reduced authors’ average wages over the past ten years.

Additionally, writers are demanding that artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT be only utilized to support or aid script ideas for research purposes rather than to completely replace the role of writers.

The Directors And Writers Are Expressing Solidarity For Each Other:

The filmmakers and writers are showing support for one another, as well as enlisting the aid of actors and even labor unions outside of Hollywood. For instance, the United Farm Workers recently appeared at the picket lines.

Todd Holland, the co-chair of the DGA bargaining team, declared through a recorded video statement:

“We are all union employees. They write the stories that we direct, that actors perform, and together we bring these stories to life with the aid of our craftspeople and drivers.”

The Directors Guild Of America Started Its Contract Negotiations On Wednesday:

According to the new updates on the US writer’s strike 2023, the Director Guild Of America now aims for this contract cycle, as described in a statement that was published online. The WGA’s demands and some concerns, such as salary, and residuals, overlap, and other elements, including giving safety training and standards on established priority, are more director-specific.

The topic of safety is being discussed in light of prominent issues that have occurred on-site over the last few years.  More specifically, the fatal shooting that occurred in 2021 on the set of the Alec Baldwin film “Rust” received the most negative media attention.

According to Cynthia Littleton, Variety’s co-editor-in-chief:

That is all very much in my thoughts. And I believe the directors are earnest when they say they want the guild to set the standard for safety in the business.

Executive producer and WGA member Aaron Ginsburg said they will be keenly observing the directors’ negotiations from their own picket lines.

Ginsburg stated-

“We are hoping that they will stand with us, as they have already stated they would. I also want them to receive a good bargain. Everybody should get a decent deal.”
